Tag 2018

The 2018 movie Tag is about a group of friends who have been playing the same game of tag for thirty years. Elaborate disguises, funerals, childbirth, and even faking a miscarriage have been used in an attempt to tag one another.

Main characters Hoagie (Ed Helms), Bob Callahan (Jon Hamm), Randy Cilliano (Jake Johnson), Kevin Sable (Hannibal Burress), and Jeremy Renner as Jerry Pierce, have a high stakes game of tag every may. And this year the stakes were even higher.

This year Jerry plans to retire with a perfect record. In the thirty years since this game started, he has never once been tagged in the month of May.  That's crazy, right? But this year the rest of the group intend to never let that happen. So they band together in order to surprise Jerry the week of his wedding.

The day they arrive the group comes up with a couple of well-thought-out schemes in order to tag Jerry. But every time he's always one step ahead of him. He is so far ahead of them it is sometimes got out of hand. The first night Jerry pretends to be masturbating in Hoagie's childhood room. Which was hilarious. Towards the end, however, Jerry goes too far by having his soon-to-be wife fake both a pregnancy and a miscarriage.

Throughout the movie Hoagie, Bob, Chilli, and Sable find out a lot about jerry that they didn't know previously. He owns a gym, teaches self-defense classes, and that he was an alcoholic. They come to realize that they aren't as close to Jerry as they use to be. Instead of the game bringing them together it was slowly pushing Jerry away.

The movie reached its climax at Jerry's wedding as Hoagie finds in the opening to tag him as they previously decided that no tagging will be accepted during the wedding. Hoagie failed and passed out during his attempt. It was then revealed that he had a tumor on his kidney. The movie ends with Jerry finally being tagged and a group of friends racing to see who will be the last one to be tagged until next year.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. While at some points it fell flat, but the good outweighed the bad. this movie was absolutely hilarious. With Ed Helms and Hannibal Buress carrying the comedic load, it was hard for this movie to not be funny. While this movie was ultimately about a child's game the action scenes were done well. A good touch being each character narrating in slow motion as they try to predict each other's moves.

If you are into comedy then I would definitely recommend that you watch this movie.

  1. I agree with you that it fell flat sometimes. I'll be honest, when I first saw it I was a little disappointed. But after watching it again and also reading this review, I've come to recognize how good it really was. I think the mix of different actors, especially some not really known for comedy, brings a special flair to this movie. - Laurel
