Black Widow
It has been a long time since a Marvel movie has been on the big screen. The last major movie being Spider-Man: Far From Home. So it was very refreshing to be back watching superhero movies in theaters and not at home.
A couple of years ago it was announced that Black Widow would be getting her own movie. The overall consensus was that it was coming too late. While this may be true I was still happy she was getting the movie she deserved.
This movie puts a different spin on the characters in comparison to their comic book counterparts. As family plays a big theme during the movie. A theme that proved to be beneficial as it created a lot of heartfelt moments and some comedic opportunities.
As always Scarlet Johansson played her part as Natasha Romanoff beautifully, but what gave the movie some great moments was Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Natasha's younger sister. Her role in the movie was not only badass but comedic as well.
Another highlight of the movie was David Harbour as Alexi Shostakov, the Red Guardian. Like Yelena, the Red Guardian brings a very comedic aspect to the film. Because of both of these characters, I found myself laughing way more than I expected too while watching a Marvel movie.
Outside the movie's great cast the fight scenes dominate the majority of the film. Black Widows' use of hand-to-hand combat is very fluid and was done very well. But there are some scenes where the CGI is very apparent and it takes away from some of the fight scenes.
When it comes to the plot of the movie, on the surface it seemed kind of basic. But after giving it some more thought it was more complex than I first realized. While the main plot is about the hero defeating the evil mastermind. The movie is also about a family finding its way back to one another.
While there were a lot of good moments this movie isn't without its flaws. As I mentioned earlier CGI was an issue in some scenes. It was painfully obvious that some things were fake and computer-generated.
One of my least favorite parts of the movie, however, was the use of Taskmaster. In the comic books and other forms of marvel media, Taskmaster is portrayed in a much cooler light. And in the movie (spoiler) taskmaster is a somewhat different character and person.
Overall Black Widow is a very enjoyable movie with a good amount of action, comedic, and heartfelt scenes. Even though the CGI was iffy at times I would recommend you go and see it if you haven't already.
